As one contemplates the purpose of the New Testament Church, it becomes apparent that there are steps Jesus calls His disciples to take in their spiritual lives. At PBCC, we have generalized these steps into three main categories, just to make it simple: CONNECT, GROW, and SERVE. As we become intentional in deepening our faith, we will make it a point to engage in each of these areas of our spiritual lives, knowing that as we do, the Holy Spirit takes control more and more, re-making us more into the image of Jesus.
We will always encourage people to connect with Jesus Christ first and foremost. When we baptize people, we do not baptize them into our church; we baptize them into the name of Jesus. The Great Commission of Christ found in Matthew 28 implores us to reach the lost and help connect them to Jesus so that they can have a renewed relationship with God the Father. But Jesus also called us to connect people into His Body, the Church. Because of these two vital connections, we at PBCC will always be seeking ways to bring people to "touch points," which are places and events that can help lead someone to connect with Jesus and His Church.
While salvation is an amazing thing, we also know that Jesus didn't call us to only make converts, but disciples. Spiritual growth is not just an accidental by-product of salvation; it is the Master Plan for the life of the believer. God's plan in saving people was, through the power of the Holy Spirit and the submission of those who come to faith, to change us - calling us from being under the control of our sinful nature and becoming more obedient to the control of the Holy Spirit. Jesus calls us to spiritual health and, simple put, healthy things GROW. Therefore, we aren't satisfied with just calling people to become Christians, we want to challenge them to take steps that will help foster spiritual growth: LifeGroups, Bible Study, personal devotional time, learning the spiritual disciples. All of these things will lead the disciple to grow in the Lord.
Jesus said that He did not come to this earth to be served, but to serve - and to give His life as a ransom for us. The life He lived was an amazing model for the disciple. We are called to live outside of ourselves, and to help foster a sense of selflessness and generosity, you will find that finding an area in which to serve is an important aspect of the Christian life here at PBCC. It may be weekly (nursery, ushering, hospitality, etc.), or monthly (chair ministry, lawn maintenance, etc.), or as needed (meals ministry, funeral ministry), or even every once in a while doing mission work or taking care of shut-ins; but whatever area it is, we belive that God calls us to serve. You will find several opportunities here at PBCC to get outside of yourself and find the blessing of being a blessing to others.
